33rd SUMMIT OF HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT OF THE AFRICAN UNION ADDIS ABA BA, 9 – 10 FEBRUARY 2020 SOUTH AFRICA TO LEAD THE ORGANIZATION IN TACKLING AFRICA’S CHALLENGES

Too many weapons are circulating in Africa, causing havoc. They feed the hotbeds of the numerous tension zones in the continent. They kill. Too many Africans, from babies to elders, are dying. Guns are the number one murderer of Africans. How to silence them? That is the question African heads of State and Government chose as the compass for their governments’ action all over the continent in 2020. “Silencing the guns in 2020” was also the theme of the 33rd African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, from 9 to 10 February 2020.

To a large extent, Africa is what African leaders intend it to be. In this regard, South African leaders have perhaps the greatest responsibility since the summit elected the Republic of South Africa to chair the AU for the year 2020, and a South African has also be elected to the newly created position of Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA).
